Reefer Trade Update: Refrigerated Cargo Maximum Weight (United States)

2015/2/9      view:

Effective March 1, 2015, APL will implement the below maximum weight in refrigerated containers for CY and store door shipments when haulage is performed by an APL designated trucker within the USA.

The maximum payload weight of cargo, packaging, and other material loaded into a refrigerated container shall not exceed the following weights specified by location:

* Higher cargo weight is possible with overweight permits in some states. Please work with relevant account manager for specific details

All cargo shipments moving overland within North America are governed by weight restriction laws established by both federal and local government agencies. Refrigerated cargo (reefer) originating in or designated to US, can carry up to 18.05 Metric Tons (or 39,800 lbs1) of cargo, if the weight is distributed in accordance to Figure 1 below:

Figure 1: Load Configuration for maximum payload 40-foot refrigerated container with clip-on genset

Assumptions:

  • Tractor weight = 19,500lbs
  • Chassis weight = 6,500lbs (fixed frame)
  • Container weight = 10,400lbs (hi-cube)
  • Fifth wheel offset = 12”
  • Clip-on genset = 2,000lbs
  • Genset fuel = 30 gallons

Caution: the sample illustration should not be used as standard. Weights may differ from those shown based on varying tractor, chassis and container configuration. Cargo to be distributed uniformly with even level so as not to exceed front axle weight limit.

1. The following states allow for only up to 17.46 Metric Tons (or 39,800lbs) of cargo: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Eastern Missouri (Saint Louis), Ohio, Wisconsin, and another location that requires APL to move out of Chicago Illinois.

Failing to comply with the legal weight limit can result in fines, liability claims, equipment damage and/or extra costs such as transloading.
